CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Celtics coach Brad Stevens said he could sense the frustration in Gerald Wallaces voice when the two spoke on Sunday. The 31-year-old Wallace wasnt pleased with the Celtics losing six of their past seven and was eager to help the team get things headed in the right direction. "I could sense that he was going to be focused and ready," Stevens said. "Hes such a competitive guy." Wallace led a productive night for Bostons reserves with a season-high 17 points, Jordan Crawford had 21 points and the Celtics defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 96-86 Monday night for their second straight victory since ending a six-game losing streak. "I had a talk with coach and the main thing he wanted me to do was to play the way I know how to play," Wallace said. "He told me not to try to figure out how to fit in or what to do, just go out and play basketball the way I know how to play basketball. ... I just wanted to go out there and be aggressive and play the way I know how to play." Said Stevens: "The effort was good and (Wallace) was a big part of that. Hes contagious in the way he plays. When he plays like that, it makes it easier to follow. Were kind of finding our way back to that Jeff (Green) and Gerald lineup more and more." For most of the game he looked like the Wallace of old, spinning and twisting his way to the basket, getting good shots and drawing contact. Crawford said Wallace gives the team "everything we need" to be successful. "He can check the best player, he can rebound, he can pass and he can score," Crawford said. Bostons reserves outscored Charlottes bench players 39-15. The Celtics got 11 points from reserve Courtney Lee and a career-high eight assists from Phil Pressey. "The bench play was the difference in the game," Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said. Crawford was 5 of 11 from the field and had five assists as the Celtics avenged an 89-83 loss to the Bobcats on Nov. 13. Wallace, who played for the Bobcats from 2004-11, was 6 of 10 from the field. Kemba Walker had 28 points and Gerald Henderson had 20 to lead the Bobcats (7-8), who were hoping to get above the .500 mark after 15 games for the first time in franchise history. Charlotte cut Bostons lead to 68-66 entering the fourth quarter, but the Celtics got a 3-pointer from Lee and a layup by Kris Humphries off a pick and roll to score 10 straight points. The Bobcats would trim the lead to six with 1:25 remaining in the game before the Celtics got an offensive rebound off a missed shot and Crawford hit a pair of free throws to make it a three-possession game with 34 seconds remaining. The Celtics came in looking to avenge a loss two weeks ago to the Bobcats that started their six-game losing skid. Boston started slow Wednesday, falling behind 20-10 but took a 47-38 lead into halftime after outscoring the Bobcats 33-17 in the second quarter. The Celtics came alive behind the outside shooting of Crawford, who knocked down three 3-pointers and led all scorers at the break with 12 points and strong play from the bench. "We came out the start of the second quarter and had nothing," Clifford said. "The same thing happened at the start of the fourth." Charlottes struggles continue at home, where they have lost five of their last six. The Bobcats entered the game with the NBAs third best defence, allowing just 83.6 points on 38 per cent shooting. But in their last six home games they have surrendered 98 points per game on 48 per cent shooting. "I dont know what it is right now with us being at home, but we just dont have that energy like we have on the road," said Bobcats centre Al Jefferson. "Thats unheard of for me. Im always used to playing well at home and not good on the road, but it is vice versa here." NOTES: Henderson has scored in double digits 13 times this season, including the last six games. ... Sabathia will have surgery Wednesday, and general manager Brian Cashman said he thinks "in theory" the big left-hander will be ready for spring training in February. But there is no guarantee Sabathia will be able to pitch effectively next season. "Given obviously the number of things that have gone on, well have to be careful with him," Cashman said Friday. "Hopefully next year will be a different story." The team all but ruled out Sabathia returning in 2014 after he had a setback early this month while he was on a minor league rehab assignment. He was hit hard July 2 in an outing for Double-A Trenton and woke up the next morning with swelling in the knee joint. One positive is that Sabathia, who turns 34 on Monday, will not have microfracture surgery Wednesday, which would require a longer recovery. Cashman said it will be an "arthroscopic debridement" -- basically, a cleanup procedure. The six-time All-Star and 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner has been out with a degenerative cartilage problem in his right knee since mid-May, when his ERA reached a career-high 5.28. "The rehab side of it which he went through, if you had three different options, that was the least," Cashman said. "Now were on the middle side of this thing, which is a cleanup of the knee, and hopefully thats good enough." The operation will be performed by Los Angeles Dodgers head physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache. Sabathia also had surgery on the knee in October 2010 to repair a small meniscus cartilage tear. After signing a $161 million, seven-year deal with the Yankees as a free agent before the 2009 season, Sabathia had his contract extended in 2011 by one year and $30 million. Making $23 million this season, Sabathia is scheduled to earn $23 million in 2015 and $25 milllion in 2016.dddddddddddd. The Yankees have a $25 million option on his deal for 2017 with a $5 million buyout. In other news, designated hitter Carlos Beltran was activated Friday from the seven-day concussion list. He batted sixth in the opener of a three-game interleague series against Cincinnati and hit an RBI single in the third inning. Rookie ace Masahiro Tanaka, sidelined with a partially torn ligament in his right elbow, wont begin a throwing program until hes pain-free. The Yankees hope he can avoid Tommy John surgery and return in September. Tanaka had a platelet-rich plasma injection. "Theres treatment, protocols, and when hes symptom-free hell start a throwing program, which obviously leads to bullpens, batting practices and hopefully rehab games. All of that has to happen without issue," Cashman said. "I know hes feeling better, but he doesnt feel symptom-free." Michael Pineda (right shoulder muscle injury) is throwing "very well" in Florida and the Yankees hope he can come back in August, Cashman said. The injuries to Sabathia, Tanaka, Pineda and Ivan Nova (season-ending Tommy John surgery) have left the third-place Yankees without four-fifths of their opening-day rotation. Hiroki Kuroda is the only one left, teaming with David Phelps, newcomer Brandon McCarthy and rookies Chase Whitley and Shane Greene to fill out a makeshift unit. Beltran was hit in the face with a ball that caromed off the batting cage July 9 in Cleveland and broke his nose. He said he was never told by a doctor that he had a concussion, but the Yankees were concerned and wanted to make sure he was OK. The club opened a roster spot for Beltran just before the All-Star break when right-hander Bryan Mitchell was optioned to Double-A Trenton after Sunday nights loss in Baltimore.
