Bill Stephenson, a legendary sportscaster who delivered sports news and play-by-play on Canadian radio and television for more than five decades, has passed away. He was 85. Born in Elrose, Saskatchewan, Stephenson started his 53-year career at CJAV in Port Alberni in 1948 and eventually made his way to Vancouver as a sportscaster at CKWX, covering events like the British Empire Games and later working as the play-by-play voice for the B.C. Lions and the Vancouver Mounties baseball club. In 1960, Stephenson moved to Toronto and became Sports Director at CFRB, covering the 1961 World Hockey Championship won by the Trail Smoke Eaters and later the 1972 Summit Series. He was the voice of the Toronto Argonauts during the 1960s and 1970s and also worked as a sideline reporter for CTVs CFL broadcasts for 15 years. In 1988, he was inducted into the the Football Reporters of Canada wing at the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. A member of the Canadian Broadcaster Hall of Fame, he was also a mentor to many sportscasters in Canada, including TSNs Brian Williams and Dave Hodge. "He was a mentor and a dear friend and really shaped me to become the broadcaster I am today," Williams said.
